Growing Through Play

What Is It?

Growing Through Play is about giving children the time, space, materials, and support to explore their world through hands-on, open-ended experiences. It recognizes play as one of the primary ways children think, create, communicate, solve problems, and make meaning.

We believe meaningful play doesn't require expensive toys or perfectly planned activities. Simple materials can become rich opportunities for discovery when children are free to use them in ways that reflect their age, interests, abilities, and imagination. With thoughtful adult support that follows rather than controls, those everyday experiences can grow into something even more meaningful

Topics We Explore

Growing Through Play may include:

  • Open-ended play
  • Imaginative play
  • Creative expression
  • Sensory and hands-on exploration
  • Nature and outdoor play
  • Problem-solving and early STEM
  • Environment and adult support

The Little Roots Approach

At Little Roots Collective, we treat play as meaningful learning. We value hands-on, open-ended experiences that give children room to explore, imagine, experiment, and make discoveries in ways that reflect their own interests, abilities, and sensory preferences.

We focus on the process rather than the finished product, recognizing that rich play does not require expensive toys, elaborate setups, or one "right" outcome. Simple materials, thoughtful environments, and intentional adult support can create deep opportunities for learning.

Adults help shape these experiences by preparing the space, observing closely, and gently extending the play when needed without taking control. Our approach protects space for children to follow their curiosity, develop their own ideas, and experience the joy of discovery.

Why It Matters

Play gives children the freedom to learn through movement, imagination, experimentation, and discovery. As they build, create, pretend, and explore, they develop language, problem-solving skills, confidence, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Caring adults help make those experiences possible by creating space for play, offering thoughtful materials, and paying attention to what captures each child's interest. Their role isn't to control the outcome, but to support, encourage, and gently extend the learning when the moment calls for it.

These experiences nurture curiosity and wonder, inviting children (and adults) to slow down, notice, ask questions, and delight in what they discover. At Little Roots Collective, we see play as a meaningful part of childhood. It honors children's natural way of learning and reflects the creativity woven throughout God's creation.
